Sources of Exposure :
Description :
Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used in food and beverages. It also may be added to medications and supplements to increase their palatability.
Sources of Exposure: Food, mediacations, and supplements.
Health Impacts: Aspartame may have possible carcinogenic properties. Aspartame is also a potential endocrine disruptor due to its possible impacts on the body including, but not limited to obesity, neurodegeneration, and allergies. Formaldehyde is a metabolite of aspartame, and some health effects associated with aspartame have been attributed to the accumulation of formaldehyde in the body. Individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU) should avoid products containing aspartame as it is converted to phenylalanine in the body.
