Health Impacts: Avobenzone is an endocrine disrupting chemical. It is harmful if swallowed and can cause skin and serious eye irritation. Avobenzone is also suspected to cause genetic defects. It is also harmful to the environment due to its long lasting, harmful effects to aquatic life. Avobenzone is a chemical UV filter. Chemical UV filters absorb UV radiation. They enter the skin and are absorbed into the bloodstream at high concentrations. Studies show they may be detected days or even weeks after application.
