PFAS is a class including thousands of chemicals, some added to consumer products for their waterproof, greaseproof, stain-proof and non-stick properties. They are used in cosmetic and personal care products (especially those labeled waterproof, sweatproof, or long-lasting), cookware, food packaging, textiles, and home goods. Environmental contamination such as drinking water can be a major source of exposure.
Sources of Exposure: Cosmetics and personal care products, cookware, food packaging, textiles, home goods, environmental contamination such as drinking water
Health Impacts: Potential health effects may be unique to the specific chemical and exposure route. While the majority of these chemicals have limited to no health research, existing research has linked some PFAS to a range of impacts including endocrine disruption, increased risk of cancer, genotoxicity, damage to individual body systems (neurological, metabolic, sensory, etc.), and adverse reproductive and developmental effects.
