Non-Profit Product Testing: Million Marker Research Institute

Did you know that many personal care products are contaminated or adulterated with harmful chemicals that aren’t on the ingredients label?

We tested personal care products and found that most had ingredients that weren’t intended to be in there.
Have you ever wondered what's really in your personal care products? That’s why we started the Million Marker Research Institute (MMRI). We're on a mission to uncover the full story behind the products you use every day.

The Two Sides of Product Ingredients

When you pick up a personal care item, you might think the ingredient list tells you everything you need to know. But there's more to the story:

  1. The Visible Side: These are the ingredients listed on the label.
  2. The Hidden Side: These are adulterants and contaminants that don't make it onto the label.

Our recent study of 67 personal care products revealed a surprising truth: many contained chemicals that weren't listed on their labels. This discovery has significant implications for your health and well-being.

From Body Testing to Product Testing

At Million Marker, we provide a mail-in test kit for known endocrine disruptors, including phthalates, parabens, bisphenols, and oxybenzone. As we continue to grow and the popularity of our mail-in test kits exploded, we noticed something interesting yet concerning:

Even people using "clean" products were testing high for toxic chemicals.

This revelation led us to start testing products directly. Unfortunately, we found that many products contained contaminants and adulterants that were not listed on their labels.

How Contamination Happens

Contamination in personal care products can occur in various ways:

  • Sourcing ingredients
  • Shipping and storage
  • Ingredients interacting with each other
  • Contamination from manufacturing equipment
  • Packaging materials
  • Temperature changes during production or storage

These factors can introduce unexpected chemicals into products, even when manufacturers follow good practices.

Should I Still Get Tested with a Detect & Detox Test Kit

Yes! Understanding your chemical exposure is the first step to reducing it.

At Million Marker, we help you understand as many sides of the story as possible:

  1. Testing your body to identify chemicals present.
  2. Helping you pinpoint which products might be causing these exposures.
  3. Providing personalized product recommendations with safer ingredients.

While not all our recommended products have been tested yet (as product testing isn't regulated and few brands do it), we're working hard to change that. That's why we started MMRI and why we need your help.

Our Current Focus

We're starting our testing journey with two product categories:

  • Diaper rash creams
  • Invisible orthodontics

By supporting MMRI, you're helping us expand our testing to more products, ensuring safer choices for everyone.

Join us in our quest for transparency and safety in personal care products. Together, we can uncover the full story and make informed choices for our health and well-being.
