What Is Octinoxate & Is It Safe?

Octinoxate is a popular ingredient in many sunscreen and skin care products because it is a UV filter. However, it has been found to have many negative and concerning health effects that do not warrant its use.

What Products Have Octinoxate In Them?

Octinoxate can be found in:

  • Sunscreen

  • Shampoos

  • Lipsticks

  • Other personal care products

Is Octinoxate Safe?

There are many health concerns surrounding the use of octinoxate in personal care products. A study found it to be highly absorbed into the bloodstream and 16 times above the proposed FDA safety threshold [1]. Because of its readily available ability to enter the bloodstream at higher than approved levels, Million Marker does recognize octinoxate as safe to use.

Health Impacts of Octinoxate Products

Octinoxate has been found to mimic estrogen and block thyroid functions. That makes octinoxate a hormone disruptor. For this reason, we highly recommend that pregnant women avoid octinoxate. It can impact normal progesterone and androgen signaling [2]. Additionally, octinoxate has been found to cause allergic reactions after exposure to ultraviolet light [3].

How to Avoid Octinoxate

Avoid this chemical by using octinoxate-free products, especially sunscreens. Opt for natural ways of protecting yourself from the sun, such as umbrellas and shade coverings.
