Description:

8:2 FTS is a fluorotelomer per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) associated with firefighting foams, industrial surfactants, coatings, treated paper, and water-, grease-, or stain-resistant textiles. It may be released during manufacturing, product use, firefighting activities, wastewater treatment, and waste disposal. In the environment and living organisms, 8:2 FTS can transform into highly persistent perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, including PFOA and other long-chain PFAS. Information about the direct long-term health effects of 8:2 FTS remains limited, but exposure to its persistent transformation products is an additional concern. Because this PFAS is environmentally persistent and may contribute to sustained human or ecological exposure directly or through transformation products, the glossary applies a precautionary approach where long-term hazard and exposure information is limited.
