Description:

N-MeFOSAA is a per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) associated with older PFOS-based stain-, grease-, and water-resistant treatments. It may be released from treated carpets, textiles, upholstery, food-contact materials, and other consumer products or formed through the breakdown of related precursor chemicals. N-MeFOSAA is environmentally persistent and can transform into PFOS, a highly persistent and bioaccumulative PFAS with well-documented health concerns. The health effects of N-MeFOSAA itself have not been studied as extensively as those of PFOS. Because this PFAS is environmentally persistent and may contribute to sustained human or ecological exposure directly or through transformation products, the glossary applies a precautionary approach where long-term hazard and exposure information is limited.
