Description:

PFUnDA is a long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS). It may originate from fluorochemical manufacturing or form through the environmental breakdown of fluorinated precursor chemicals. Exposure may occur through contaminated food, particularly fish and seafood, as well as drinking water, household dust, and industrial pollution. PFUnDA is extremely persistent and can accumulate in people, wildlife, and food webs. Available studies raise concerns about possible effects on development, reproduction, the liver, and metabolism, but its health effects have not been characterized as extensively as those of PFOA and PFOS. Because this PFAS is environmentally persistent and may remain mobile or bioaccumulative depending on its structure and exposure setting, the glossary applies a precautionary approach where long-term hazard and exposure information is limited.
